The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Nokia and Siemens is planning on merging its phone equipement. The merge will apparantly save $1.58 billion by eliminating duplicate Research & Development operations. But the real benefit of the merge would be the stronger market position in the midst of emerging Asian competitors.

Finland's Nokia is the world's number one handset provider. A merge with Germany's Siemens AG would create a company worth an estimated $31.5 billion.
